News from Carl and Kathy

What a challenging year it has been for so many people globally.  There are many opportunities for each of us to pray for others and be gospel light around us.  We have had to make many adjustments to our regular rhythms and life routines. I am sure you have had to do the same.  In this update I would like to: 1) share with you some of the ways progress is being made in ministry; 2) update you on some family news; and 3) share how you can pray for us.  Thank you so much for your prayers and generous partnership in ministry!
With thankful hearts,

Carl and Kathy

I am pleased to report that since my last newsletter I have become more integrated in ministry and have learned much about the ministries our teams are doing.  I had the opportunity to spend six hours over four Zoom calls, with ASL interpreters, to get to know Missy, who is deaf, and will be joining our deaf ministry specialist team..  I was very pleased with the conversations and Missy's ministry experience.  I LEARNED A LOT about deaf culture in those calls.  I also discovered that intentional effort must be given to understanding the cultural differences.  To communicate effectively takes more than just a common language!  Missy will particularly focus on helping our teams and partners find ways to reach the deaf communities in their midst.  Our hope is see deaf people come to faith and be discipled to become leaders in their churches.

The past few months have been marked by two significant events in our family.  First, Kathy completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology: Christian Counseling. She graduated Summa Cum Laude.  We are so proud of her!  We had a wonderful small family celebration in the back yard to honor her achievement. Second, we learned that Lauren and Matt will be having a baby in February 2021.  Kathy and I are very excited to become grandparents! The uncles-to-be are looking forward to spoiling their niece when she arrives.

I have co-labored with Gus and Shikha for many years.  They are faithful servants amongst the poorest of the poor in Kolkata.  Recently they shared two pieces of exciting news from their ministry.  One is they received a special certification from the Central Indian Government which will ensure their ability to work with international partners ongoing.  Gus and I labored on this for over 5 years.  Second, is the baptism of new believers in two of the communities they serve.  I have had the pleasure of walking alongside Gus and the two church planters who performed the baptisms.  One of the young ladies baptized was set to be married at age 15, but due to the influence of Gus, Shikha and these church planters her parents allowed her to stay in school instead.  Since then she has become a follower of Jesus and an example in the community to invest in their daughters.  Lives changed. Communities transformed.  The power of the Gospel.

COVID 19 has impacted so many normal ministry routines and patterns. Here are some ways you can pray:

  • Pray for an effective conference for our Asia Region (Oct 12-15) as we use a virtual format instead of "in person" meetings.

  • Pray for wisdom for our global workers and leaders as decisions are made about adjusting ministry and returning to the field.

  • Pray for our new staff preparing for ministry in these challenging times.

  • The impact of our ministry transition and COVID 19 has had a double impact on our ministry support account.  Pray for a strong 4th quarter of giving.

Please email us with any prayer requests you may have!
