Our Favorite Christmas Movies for 2020
Christmas Eve services are complete for the year. God did so much over these five services and it was a joy to gather both in person and online to celebrate the birth of Jesus. If you missed it, you can catch the worship experience here.
As we settle in for the night, we have a question for you, “What do a leg lamp, a 6 ft 3 in elf, and the phrase “You filthy animal!” have in common?” Christmas movies, of course! Bonus points if you know which ones. *wink*
This year we’ll all be staying in for the holidays but that doesn’t mean the fun is cancelled. We asked our Vintage Grace staff to share their favorite Christmas flicks and added a few ideas to bring a little extra cheer to your family movie night.
Here are our favorites in no particular order:
All Staff Pick: Home Alone
Whether you only watch the classic original or make a marathon of all three movies, Kevin and his epic plan to save Christmas from would-be burglars is always a kick. For added fun build your own indoor obstacle course to try after the movie. No hot irons, machine guns or swinging paint cans required.
David Krall: While You Were Sleeping
When Lucy (Sandra Bullock) saves Peter (Peter Gallagher) from certain death in a commuter train accident Peter winds up unconscious and through a misunderstanding Lucy is mistaken for Peter’s fiance. This is a great date night flick or one to watch while you wrap gifts after the kids are in bed. Curl up with your loved one, grab a Christmas project or enjoy some cocoa while you wait to see if Lucy ends up with Peter or if she finds love elsewhere, while he’s sleeping.
Jen Sodestrom: The Star
Grab the kids, some blankets and pillows and curl up on the couch with this animated rendition of the original Christmas story. See what happens as the animals do their very best to keep Mary and her unborn baby safe from Herod and his nefarious plans. For an added treat try one of Jen’s easy favorites: Pop some popcorn and throw in your favorite candy coated chocolate pieces for added fun.
Michael Dacy: Christmas With The Kranks
Ready for warmer weather and some non-Holiday themed fun? This movie may be just what you’re looking for. When empty nesters played by Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis try to skip Christmas (and town) for the holidays, hilarity ensues. Rustle up a favorite summer meal (BBQ, anyone?) and stream this one on the back patio with some extra blankets and your favorite warm drinks.
Drew Sodestrom: A Christmas Story
“You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” This classic from 1983 is still a favorite around here. Sit back and see if Ralphie can convince anyone a BB gun is a good idea. Amp up the fun with your own game of lazer tag or nerf wars after the showing.
Jasen: Elf
At 6 foot 3 inches Buddy is the biggest elf ever, or is he? In this fun pick Buddy (Will Ferrell), travels to New York to find his family and discovers the world outside the North Pole. This is a great one to watch while decorating Christmas cookies or enjoying the “four main food groups, candy, candy canes, candy corn and syrup.”
Erin Fredline: Little Women
“Not sure if this is truly considered a Christmas movie,” writes Erin, “but we always watched it during this season.” Maybe you have a movie you always watch at this time of year too. Whatever movie you choose, the point is more about making memories than the movie itself.
What are your favorite Christmas movies? How can you add to the fun of movie night this year?
